This necklace was inspired by a tube-like jade cong from the Neolithic period. Cong are often found buried in ancient Chinese tombs, but their purpose is a mystery. Since jade cannot be carved, but must be abraded, each cong took months to create.

pink clouds fibula

From Wikipedia: "A Fibula (Latin "to fasten"[1]) is an ancient brooch. Technically, the Latin term fibulae refers specifically to Roman brooches, however, the term is widely used to refer to brooches from the entire ancient and early medieval world. Unlike modern brooches, fibulae were not only decorative, they originally served a practical function: to fasten clothes, including cloaks. Fibulae replaced straight pins that were used to fasten clothing in the Neolithic period and Bronze Age. In turn, fibulae were replaced as clothing fasteners in the Middle Ages by buttons. Their descendant, the modern safety-pin, remains in use today."

These are handmade in much the same way as fibulae have always been. Lengths of sharpened bronze wire beaded with copper coils, sterling silver beads, recycled African glass and stone-- rose quartz and rhodenite.

This listing is for one brooch. The two in the picture give an idea of the type of variations that can be expected with these pieces as each one is handformed with handmade beads.

These are roughly 2 1/2" (7cm) in length.

The last picture shows the Pink Clouds Fibula pin on one of DyeDianaDye's Cirrus Sunset Kestrel vests. Kestrels are funky, elegant vests with wings - in a drape that is incredibly flattering. Each is handmade from lightweight 100% organic cotton jersey and handdyed using a shibori komasu pattern using low-impact reactive dyes.
