Doodle Book - Morning Glories

Here's is the first of a series of doodle books, 4" x 5" big... or small, actually. I decided to make books for people to doodle in, after being introduced to National Doodle Day (March 5th).

Have you ever heard about this before? National Doodle Day is wholly owned by Epilepsy Action and The Neurofibromatosis Association, both registered charities in England. All doodles by individuals, including celebrities, are auctioned, and the money raised supports the two charities. Next year, National Doodle Day will be held Friday, February 11.

The front and back of this doodle book is covered with handmade Japanese Washi papers. Even though the violet and magenta morning glories are on a black background, they remind me of spring. There is a black disk for the bead-marker. Waxed Irish linen thread holds the eight signatures in place.

Any Week Planner - Land of Enchantment

This "any week" planner includes 63 weekly blocks on the right side of the book, and lined paper on the left. Good to record appointments or special events that you want to remember. You record what week it is and go from there.

Handmade Japanese Washi papers were purchased for the covers. The planner is sewn together with 4-ply waxed Irish linen thread. An oval wooden bead hangs off the thread at the top. Use it to mark your place or just as a decoration.

Blank Journal - Purple Petals

A combination of purple and white petals and waves adorn this Japanese Washi paper. The small journal uses blank 22 lb. paper, and is sewn together with white waxed Irish linen thread. Carry it in a bag or jacket pocket, or maybe place it in a small nook in your suitcase to use on a journey.

The book is 4.25" x 4.50" and has nine signatures, totaling in 144 pages. Sewn together using the coptic stitch.

Blasket Stone #1

I picked up this beach stone while vacationing on Greater Blasket Island (Ireland), the westernmost point in all of Europe. I've read the villagers moved off the island in 1953... except for one woman, who continues to raise sheep and spin wool. My family took a ferry from the "mainland" at Dingle, and stayed on the island all day. We took a long hike, had a picnic lunch, looked at the historic village, and some of us even went swimming. I'm talking Ireland at the end of May!

This is the first in a series of necklaces I'm calling "Blasket Stone" (love walking on beaches, and looking for interesting rocks and shells!) I chose to enter this first necklace in JAM's (Jewelry Artisans' Marketplace - 1000 Markets) July Inspirational Challenge, called "Down By the Seaside." Perfect fit - thanks Kristen!

Along with the Irish sea stone, there is a sterling silver Celtic circle (say that 3 x's fast!) The foundation of the necklace is made with heishe hammer shell beads, 2-3 mm in size. Hammer shells are any species of Malleus that have narrow and elongated "wings," giving them a hammer-shaped outline. The length of the necklace is 21½". And there are matching sterling silver French wire earrings.

This pink and baby blue pendant, the focal piece of the necklace, was purchased by me from an antique mall last year. Believe the pendant is made with turquoise, crystals, and glass beads. I'm thinking the original necklace had been a gift to an expectant mother, when the sex of newborns was not possibly known. Chipped amazonite stones and small oval glass beads make up the foundation of the repurposed necklace.
