This is my first blog ever and the first time I have personally ventured onto the online selling world... I am very excited and am looking forward to this experience.
My jewelry is characterized by the collective process that is required to create a single piece -- it is not possible for just one person to make the jewelry. I work with artisans in Jaipur that use techniques that were developed around the 17th century in Rajasthan, India. Jewelry from this period was noted for being double-sided -- one side with spectacular enameled designs and the reverse encrusted with gems set in a special form of 24k gold called kundan.
The master craftsmen I work with specialize in a particular skill and have learned their craft from the generation before them. They believe it is their duty to pass on their knowledge to the next generation to keep this art form alive. I feel very lucky to be a part of this tradition and I love designing and the entire production process. It's really an amazing experience because it is so collaborative and so rooted in the ability to communicate with one another.
Although the techniques used to render my pieces are hundreds of years old, the inspiration for my individual collections, enamel motifs and choices of gemstones spans across cultures, time periods and is influenced by the natural world. I am able to bring my vision as a designer to fruition because of the incredible skill of the artisans, their admirable adaptability and willingness to experiment and try something new.
This is what I love most about what I do -- the idea of looking into the past with a fresh perspective to create something that is contemporary, contextual and meaningful. My family hails from Rajasthan, so for me, designing jewelry connects me to my heritage while being able to express my personal narrative as a global citizen -- multicultural, cosmopolitan and layered with the many experiences that have molded me into who I am today.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy looking at my pieces and find something that connects with you!
