How "Happy Hands" Happened

I originally formulated Happy Hands for myself, after I tried -- and failed! -- to find a commercial product that worked for me.

Up here in the high mountain desert, dry hands are a year-round problem. I needed a creamy lotion that would deeply moisturize & soften my hands, but absorb quickly and NOT leave a greasy residue on my hands that would transfer to my knitting. And of course, it had to smell wonderful!

It took me a year to work out this formula: a lotion that is so very thick and creamy so you only need a small dollop, quickly absorbed, nourishing and moisturizing with NO greasy residue; and glossy pure white, because I don't want to add any artificial colors to my products.

Why "Happy Hands" Work So Well

~ Goat’s milk is naturally high in protein, triglycerides, and loaded with absorbable Vitamins A, B6, B12 and E ... making it an excellent natural moisturizer that helps hydrate and nourish your skin.

~ Bee's honey has been used in skin products since ancient times, because it is a natural antioxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory.

KNIT GLAMOUR Hollywood 1942 Knitter's Spiralbound Journal Notebook

This is a spiral-bound notebook for knitters, its cover featuring a gaggle of the most glamorous gals you've ever seen, feathered, bejeweled and busy knitting on DPNs.

The notebook is a great size: 8-1/2 inches tall by 5-1/2 inches wide by 1/2 inch thick, big enough to actually write in, but still compact enough to slip into your purse, briefcase or knitting bag.

Inside the front cover is space to record your knitting patterns and the yarn you'll need; and the notebook is filled with blank lined pages just waiting for your jotted inspirations.

How I Make Them

My electronic collage design was inspired by a vintage black-and-white photograph of showgirls, posing in 1942 Hollywood. My guess is that they were knitting socks for WWII soldiers.

To make this digital collage, I scanned and restored the original photo, touching up and sharpening the image, then carefully colored and tinted it with a silvery moonlight & lavender wash.

Across the bottom of the image I added my message text, "Knit Glamour", in an appropriately stylish font.

To get the high resolution and detail that I want, I had my original collage design professionally printed on heavyweight 110-lb card stock for the cover, using archival inks, with a glossy finish.

The notebook is bound with a heavy-duty double metal spiral, coated in glossy black.

NIGHT SCHOOL for OWLS Cotton Canvas Tote or Knitting WIP Bag from kNotes for kNitters

I created this design, showing little owls perched on books listening attentively to a Teacher Owl, based on an antique Arts and Crafts style bookplate.

I restored and altered the original print image, recoloring it in earth tones of sage, taupe and mushroom accented with orange, added a starry night sky, then carefully re-traced the lines by hand to enhance the woodcut geometry ... with the results you see here!

This would make a lovely gift for a teacher or a librarian, don't you think?

Item Description

This is a medium-to-large size bag made of sturdy, heavy duty cotton canvas in a NATURAL CREAM color, double-stitched for strength.

It measures 13-1/2 inches square (or 34.29 cm, if you prefer), has 14 inch handles, and a 3-1/2 inch deep gusset for expanding contents.

Which means it holds plenty of yarn, knitting works-in-progress up to a large sweater size ... or groceries, library or text books, your mail ... whatever you need to tote.

How I Make Them

First I print my original digital collage design, using high-end ink jet colors for brilliance. Then I heat transfer the image using my own professional thermal press.

The design on this bag measures approximately 8x10, and is printed on the front; the back is intentionally left blank.

Easy Care Instructions

Should you want to machine wash the bag, you can! Simply turn the bag wrong-side out and gently wash in cold water, then dry flat. No bleach, no dry-cleaning.

If you decide it ever needs ironing, I recommend you use a pressing cloth to protect the image.

I designed this card - featuring a 1960s-era Portland woman knitting - especially for Sock Summit 09, held in Portland more than 40 years after the original black-and-white photo was taken.

And I took some artistic liberties with color: jazzed up her sunglasses with lime green & polka dots, colored her knitting purple, and scrawled my "knitters are so cool" message in hot pink.

POSTER "Hands Knit" Vintage Knitting Photo Collage from kNotes for kNitters

Here I've taken my most popular knitting photo collage design and made it into a striking 11x17 poster!

This is "Hands Knit #1", a composite collage of 11 different images of knitting hands, which I also offer as note cards, postcards and fiber care gift tags.

Each pair of hands in my collage is "real", and came from a vintage photograph or postcard dating from 1866 to 1932. (One pair of hands shown belonged to Queen Victoria! I'll leave you to guess which. Email me if you'd like a clue.)

In this large format, I have room to identify the country of origin and date of each image. These captions fascinate people: they'll stand in front of it, absorbed, until they're read every one!

This poster is perfectly suited to framing, which will enhance its looks and protect it, but the glossy coated cardstock I use is also heavy enough to mount it as is.

How I Make Them

The original images come from my crazy-huge collection of vintage knitting photographs, snapshots, stereoviews and postcards. I only work with these fragile antiques digitally -- no originals were harmed in the making of this collage! -- retouching, repairing, and lightly colorwashing them.

I use a warm chocolate brown for the background, and frame each individual image in a white border. At the bottom, the series title "Hands Knit" is printed in bright yellow, the words punctuated by a red ball of yarn.

To get the level of photographic detail I want, I have my original collage design professionally printed on heavyweight coated cardstock, using fade-resistant archival inks. Trimmed and finished, the poster measures 11 inches wide and 17 inches tall.

Shipping

To prevent creasing or curling, I ship your poster FLAT, not rolled. I double-wrap it, with flat sheets of protective cardboard inside a cardboard box.

2010 WALL CALENDAR Vintage Images of Knitting and Crochet from kNotes for kNitters

This is my second annual wall photo calendar, celebrating the diversity of knitting and crochet in American history! Each month is illustrated with an authentic, vintage black-and-white photograph of Americans knitting.

The subjects reflect the diversity of knitters and crocheters in America -- men, women, oldsters, youngsters, Amish ladies and glamour gals.

For the monthly illustrations, I chose 12 of my favorite photos, restored and lightly touched some of them with color, then identified them as best I could with their locations and dates.

They range from the 1870s to the 1970s, and were taken in Boston, California, Georgia, Missouri, New York City, Ohio, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Vermont and Virginia. For the calendar cover, I created a collage of all 12 of the inside photos.

And NEW this year: in addition to holidays, I've added all of the major wool & fiber arts events I could find, held in the U.S., U.K., Canada and New Zealand!

PLEASE NOTE: I printed only a limited edition of this calendar, so the ones I have listed here are all that I have left!

Description:

This is a large, spiral-bound wall calendar, which I had professionally printed with archival ink to get the photographic quality reproduction I wanted.

It measures 8-1/2 x 11 inches closed; open, 17 x 11 inches. Each photo is a full page, measuring approximately 6-1/2 x 9 inches.

The covers and all photo pages are printed on GLOSSY finish heavyweight cardstock. The calendar pages themselves are printed on MATTE finish heavyweight cardstock (which is easier to write on than the glossy finish).

The monthly calendar page displays are each 7-1/2 inches x 9 inches; individual date boxes are approximately 1-1/2 inches square, with plenty of room for your notations.

Packing & Shipping

I carefully wrap and ship your calendar flat in a protective board mailer to prevent postal damage. (I hate bent or curled calendars.) I am happy to ship it to you, or directly to your lucky gift recipient with a complimentary gift card!

Holly Berry HAPPY HANDS Goats Milk Honey HAND CREME for Fiber Artists LITTLEST HAPPY 2oz Travel Size

I always thought it a shame that pretty red holly berries have no scent, so I've created the sort of scent they should have: bright raspberry blended with orange zest, with an underlying woodsy fragrance.

It's a cheerful, sprightly scent for the holidays, but I also think you could wear it year-round.
