Juried Student ArtThis shop presents the art of undergraduate students at Hunter College, City University of New York, including senior people who register as auditors. The works were juried in through an annual competition by Curator/Juror Eleanor Gilpatrick, who is also an artist (www.EGilpatr.1000markets.com). This site has no official connection with Hunter College. It is a personal undertaking. Juried works for 2008 were originally in administrative space at Hunter College, but when the space was severely cut back, the idea of showing and selling online became a viable alternative. Once a year, up to 12 juried works are selected and put on display in this shop. The description for each piece includes information about the artist, shipping options, and details about the piece. The students set their own prices. The BUYER needs to know that, for paintings on stretched canvas, the professional standard is 1.5 inch (heavy duty) stretchers, stapled in the back, with painted sides, and wired to hang. Such pieces do not need a frame. They are called gallery wrapped. Some student work is done on 3/4 inch stretchers, some with staples on the sides, some without painted sides. In a large piece, slender unframed stretchers pose a danger of warping. Paintings on 3/4 inch stretchers with unpainted sides and stapled on the sides do not meet the standards for showing in a brick and mortar gallery, but we do offer such paintings, which are ready to be framed. The descriptions of each piece include such information. Students must report this information, and warped paintings are never shown here. Please note that the curator does not support the shipment of art that is removed from its stretchers and rolled. There is too great a chance that the works will be damaged or shrunk while being off the stretchers. It is better to invest in shipping the stretched pieces. The curator hopes to be influencing students to adhere to professional standards. The students and the curator hope you find the work skilled, moving, and delightful. |
