WHAT IS TATTING - Quoting Websters Dictionary, a lacelike trimming of knotted loops and threads. This maybe tatting to Mr. Webster but it can hardly convey the soft and delicate snowflake quality of a tatted collar or the exquisite laciness of a hankies tatted border. Tatting has been with us for centuries, having been found in the tombs of Egyptian Kings and mentioned in Chaucers Canterbury Tales. Tatting is rich in history and believed to be first used by ancient mariners for their fishing nets. Because of it durability and longevity this may be the true origin of this art form. Today's tatting may date back to the early 1800s when a refined look appeared. This form carrying on thought the first half of the last century and falling from popularity in the 1930s and 40s.
