Cork and Cotton

I have sewn most of my life. My Grandmother owned a custom sewing shop in Canada when I was growing up and she taught me how to sew and make my own patterns.

My love of cork started a few years ago. The Cork Store is near my family in Canada. They sell floors, furniture, shoes, wallets, and even clothing all made from cork. After putting cork flooring in my kitchen and admiring it's beauty and durability, I decided it was time to start sewing with the cork fabrics.

Cork fabric is soft, lightweight, durable, waterproof and a renewable resource. Thin strips of cork are shaved from the bark of the cork oak tree, adhered to a cotton backing and sealed. The bark of the tree will grow back so the tree is not damaged. The tree may be then harvested again in about ten years.
